The Egyptian Mau Cat Breed

The Egyptian Mau is possibly the oldest known feline breed and the only one that can claim to be a naturally spotted breed rather than the deliberate creation of modern-day breeders. The Mau’s ancestry can be traced to the time of the Pharaohs. Mau means cat in the ancient Egyptian tongue.

A svelte cat, the Mau is of medium size and similar build to the Abyssinian. Its head is a slightly rounded wedge shape with large, almond shaped, expressive eyes of gooseberry green which are emphasized with mascara-like markings.

The fine, silky coat is of medium length, ticked with one or two bands of color. Judges prefer the spots to be round and evenly distributed, but they tend to be rather random. The legs and tail are banded and there is one or more broken necklaces on the chin. Distinctive markings of an Egyptian scarab, or beetle can be seen between the ears, with the scarab’s head facing the tail.

The recognized colors are silver (black spots on a silver agouti background), bronze (chocolate spots on a bronze agouti background) and smoke (black spots on a grey background, with a silver undercoat).

Maus are friendly cats, though said to be some what aloof with strangers. They have a sweet, quiet, almost bird-like voice and their fondness for warmth and serenity makes them an ideal indoor cat.
